Why is it that most of us have no problem saying we have a physical doctor's appointment
or can call in sick with a physical illness, but in booking time off to see a psychologist,
counselor or spiritual "doctor" we avoid the conversation all together?
It seems that in our culture its O.K. to be physically sick, but not mentally, emotionally
or spiritually. Perhaps it's because our culture perceives physical illness as something
beyond our control - something external. Emotional or spiritual sickness on the other
hand evokes in us a fear of our own inability to control it within ourselves. Physical
illness is less scary - somehow we believe it has nothing to do with … the rest of us.
If, however you are reading this article, it is likely that you accept at some level that
our way of looking at the world, has, at least, something to do with our bodies degree of
health. I would go so far as to say that a visit to the physical doctor, in many cases,
says that we have detached from and/or abused our own emotional, spiritual truths to the
extent that it has manifested itself into a physical illness.
Ever heard of cellular regeneration? Well, it is a biological fact that our physical bodies
are self-regenerating organisms. Cellular regeneration means that our body replaces itself
with new cells. Depending on what source you read (from Dr. Deepak Chopra, MD to Gray's
Anatomy), our body completely replaces its tissues and cells every 1 to 7 years. The cells
of eyes replace themselves in only 2 days, the intestinal lining replaces every 5-30 days
and skin cells 3-4 weeks. Liver cells regenerate every 6 weeks, and muscles get replaced
every 6 months to 3 years. The pancreas takes 5-12 months, our bones replace every 8
months to 4 years and red blood cells replace every 90-120 days.
If, physically we have an entirely new body every 1 to 7 years why is it that our eczema,
our limp, intestinal cramping, headaches or ulcers stay with us for a life time? Is it
because the energy within our cells, our thoughts and emotional patterns remain unchanged?
If so, it follows that by changing our way of thinking and acting in the world, we are
re-creating ourselves and an in doing so, we re-create our-Cells. I like to call it
cellular re-creation. "Images, indeed all thoughts (and feelings) are electrochemical
events, which are intricately woven into the fabric of the brain and the
body." (Jeanne Achterberg Imagery in Healing) Our tissues, organs and cells
maintain this energetic information and through specific techniques we can "ask" our
bodies for information.
When asked, and if we remain present to our experience, our bodies respond with an array of
information including physical sensations, imagery, memories, emotions, or specific
thoughts. Every symptom, feeling, doubt or memory that arises carries within it a message
for us. When released and honoured we experience the meaning of the information and can
choose our responses to it consciously. This choice in and of itself releases the energetic
pattern inherent in our dis-ease. Our bodies are very clever in the way that they display
their symptoms or messages. Our bodies really are speaking to us. I will give you two real
life examples.

A young man develops bladder cancer because he is "pissed off" and unable to accept and
release the negative impact his alcoholic father had in his life. Once he accepts his
cancer as a messenger - as a friend and not an enemy he embraces it and the tumor
shrinks. Then using body awareness and meditation he listens for more information - stored
memories, and blocked energy. It is then through his inner vision that his body is affected
at a cellular level. He lets go of his anger, it dissolves and is released. His
mind-body-soul comes back into balance and the tumor is gone.
A young woman develops a streptococcus skin infection with boils the size of golf balls
that the infectious disease specialists can't explain. They prescribed antibiotics. Then,
she reads a sentence in a book that settles into her with an Ah Ha! The metaphor - repressed
emotions that build and build until they explode… OH!… she's reminded of the feelings she's
had to repress for so long and the 'flashbacks' of abuse she's been having since the boils
started. Her feelings and memories were indeed coming out of her in a 'pussy mess'. Once
the emotional connection was recognized, she refused the antibiotics and has never had a
boil since. It's been 8 years.
It many societies, much older than our own, internal conflict is viewed as a prelude to a
greater understanding in ones life. It is considered an initiation that is met with
respect, honour and acceptance, rather than fear and judgment. I foresee the future in our
society where people will become increasingly aware - not just of BIG flashing warning
signs, but of more subtle cues that their soul imparts to them. People will accept support
in exploring and learn to play in their unconscious-conscious fields. Prevention and
self-knowledge will become the norm and health care costs will decrease. Along with these
changes, institutionalized religions will soften into meaningful communities where the felt
experience of spirituality will merge with health care. This is the overriding vision and
goal of Creative Spiritual Consultation and Therapy.
With this vision in mind, Creative Spiritual Consultation uses a cross section of methods
in meditation, body centered psychotherapy, imagery and expressive art to support clients
in exploring the body-mind relationship between their unconscious-conscious and
material-spiritual selves. The creative aspect of therapy allows us to play in a way that
validates our innate and unique creative capacity. The spiritual approach honours our
life's experiences and considers the messages within them as inclined toward our health and
growth. Together, the process accesses the emotional and spiritual causes behind
psychological and physical dis-ease or illness.
This process is creative as it is spiritual. It is a way of accepting our place as a
co-creator with the source of life itself. We know that the source of life itself
regenerates our cells on a physical level often. It is our job to change the information on
an emotional/spiritual level as well. By entering into this process of co-creation with
courage and trusting its enfoldment we allow ourselves to manifest our potential. It then
becomes possible for us to live out our life's purpose in harmony with the rest of the
world. In this way our-Cells and our-Selves are not only regenerated but are also
recreated.
